After Husband’s Early Death, Journalist Helps Prepare Others

Reporter Randi Belisomo became an unexpected caregiver after her husband, former WBEZ and CLTV reporter Carlos Hernandez Gomez, was diagnosed with colon cancer. The young couple talked about treatments and work, but not death.

“We talked about all of those things, but we didn’t talk about the inevitable. When doctors told us that his cancer was treatable, it wasn’t curable, but we could still do several things,” Belisomo said on Morning Shift on Tuesday.

After his death, Belisomo used their experiences to help others “start the conversation” about death and dying. She partnered with Hernandez Gomez’s oncologist and close friend, Dr. Mary Mulcahy, to create Life Matters Media.

Their mission for Life Matters Media: to become the premiere provider of information, resources and support for all involved in end of life decision-making.

“So from my background in communication, journalism, etc. and her in medicine, we got together and got some great people together who know a lot more about various issues than certainly I did, and put together an organization to help other people plan better so they can have the quality of life at the end of life that all of us want, but it means different things to different people,” Belisomo added.
